What is Panchang?

Panchang (पञ्चाङ्ग) literally means "five limbs" — it is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac based on Vedic astronomy. The five limbs are:

  1. Tithi — Lunar day (phase of the Moon relative to the Sun)
  2. Nakshatra — Lunar mansion (Moon's position among 27 stellar constellations)
  3. Yoga — Luni-solar combination (sum of Sun and Moon longitudes)
  4. Karana — Half of a Tithi (60 in a lunar month)
  5. Vaara — Day of the week (named after celestial bodies)

Panchang is essential for determining auspicious timings (muhurat) for important life events, daily worship, festivals, and rituals. All calculations are location-specific because sunrise/sunset times vary by geography.
